George Simson
(or Simpson):
By 1787 George Simson was in business as an upholder, cabinet-maker and
undertaker at 19 St Pauls Church Yard where he continued to trade until
1839. He was known at the time & since for making high quality, fashionable furniture
from Sheraton's designs. Simson
used two labels to identify his work, the later version was decorated with two hatchments.
This later label dates this chest of drawers post 1800.
George Simson is listed in Geoffrey
Beard and Christopher Gilbert's Dictionary of English Furniture Makers,
1660-1840. In 1793 he subscribed to
Sheraton's Drawing Book and in 1803 was included in the list of master
cabinet makers in the Cabinet Dictionary. |
